Description Of The Workplace

The Department of Physics at Lund University runs the world-class semiconductor nanofabrication facility Lund Nano Lab (LNL). LNL is part of Myfab – the national infrastructure for micro and nano fabrication. It is a key infrastructure for Nanolund, the Center for Nanoscience at Lund University, which is world-leading in the materials science and applications of nanostructured semiconductors. LNL turns over approx. 45 MSEK annually and consists of circa 1200 m2 laboratory area whereof 600 m2 is designated semiconductor clean room. The lab hosts approximately 80 tools, including those for deposition, growth, etch, and patterning of semiconductor materials. There are also a number of specialised instruments for characterization and metrology. The lab has over 140 active users from academia and industry. The LNL team includes 11 highly qualified scientists, engineers, and technicians, including a number of Ph.D.s, who are focused on keeping the facility running, equipment available, and providing a service to all users so that they can conduct their research. Lund Nano Lab is seeking an experienced chemist with a strong focus on chemical safety, management, training, and documentation. This is a broad and responsible role encompassing chemical governance, user training, risk assessment, and safety development across the cleanroom facility. The successful candidate will support both users and staff through activities including (but not limited to) introductory safety training, wet bench training, chemical safety oversight, purchasing, inventory control, and waste management. In addition to chemical-related responsibilities, the role also includes contributing to general cleanroom operations, process support, equipment interaction, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will interface closely with students, scientists, and engineers to provide guidance on processes, equipment, and safe laboratory practices, reporting to the Facility and Operations Manager of LNL. With plans underway to build a new cleanroom at Science Village in Lund and significantly expand capacity, this is an exciting opportunity to take on a diverse and high-impact role within a growing and dynamic research environment.

Work Duties

• Take overall responsibility for chemical procurement, management, and inventory control within the cleanroom and associated laboratory areas.
• Prepare and manage chemical solutions in support of wet etch processing, cleaning processes, and related fabrication activities.
• Tool owner for wet bench equipment, including coordination of maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and procurement of new systems to support current and future wet processing activities.
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve chemical handling policies, safety procedures, and risk assessments across the organisation.
• Monitor and report on cleanroom cleanliness levels, as well as the quality of in-house media such as ultra-pure water and other controlled utilities.
• Ensure safe storage, handling, documentation, and traceability of hazardous and non-hazardous semiconductor processing materials, including chemicals and precursors in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms.
• Create and deliver training materials and user training in wet chemical processes and safe laboratory practices.
• Review, update, and optimise existing wet chemical processes and chemical inventories, including waste management routines.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of safety protocols and emergency preparedness procedures.
• Act as a primary contact person for chemical safety and related matters, working closely with management and designated safety personnel.
• Ensure quality control and monitoring of chemicals used in lithographic and related fabrication processes.
• Communicate procedural updates and safety-related changes clearly and consistently to users, staff, and researchers via the in house laboratory information management system, LIMS.
• Provide expert guidance to students, scientists, and engineers on chemical processes, wet processing methodologies, and laboratory safety.
• Proficiency in Swedish and English, both written and spoken.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position are:

• Master's degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on laboratory experience following graduation.
• Strong background in wet chemistry and laboratory chemical handling.
• Demonstrated experience with laboratory safety protocols and safe working practices.
• Ability to prepare and maintain technical documentation and risk assessments.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with researchers and technical staff.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

• Knowledge of Swedish environmental and work environment legislation relevant to laboratory operations.
• Experience working in a cleanroom environment.
• Familiarity with photoresist chemistry and microfabrication-related wet processes.
• Strong understanding of the safety hazards associated with semiconductor process gases.
• Experience in teaching or training users in laboratory or cleanroom settings.
