Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral research fellow position to work with Dr Shane Cooper on the project “Controllably accurate models for metamaterials via a novel mathematical analysis”. The project focuses on the quantitative homogenisation theory of linear partial differential equations with rapidly oscillating and degenerating coefficients. The main focus will be on spectral and time-dependent problems in the whole space or thin domains.
The responsibilities of the post will include carrying out vigorous, high-level research in the area of mathematical analysis, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals; participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences.
This post is available from 1st July 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics with preference in, but not limited to, analysis of PDEs, spectral theory, homogenisation theory of elliptic operators. The candidate should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date.
The successful candidate is expected to have some expertise and research experience in analysis of partial differential equations. An outstanding candidate will have prior working experience in the homogenisation theory of elliptic partial differential equations, with some knowledge of operator-type error-estimate analysis and/or high-contrast homogenisation theory.
If you have any queries regarding the vacancy or the application process, please contact Anna Rutherford.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Shane Cooper.
We particularly welcome female applicants and those from an ethnic minority, as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
