Research Fellow

The Department of Economics has an opportunity for a Level B Research Fellow who will conduct independent and collaborative research within their appointed field, contributing to the development of their expertise and producing publications, conference papers, and seminar presentations. The post-doctoral fellow will support academics on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project, “Macroeconomic Analysis of the Australian Higher Education System,” which aims to analyse the Australian tertiary system using linked ABS and Department of Education data to inform policy on graduate earnings, peer effects, and field-of-study allocation.

The role involves supervising research-support staff, guiding junior researchers, contributing to grant proposals, and engaging in professional activities such as conferences and seminars. Occasional teaching, co-supervision of honours or postgraduate research projects, and participation in research or faculty meetings are also required, ensuring the candidate actively contributes to both research output and the broader academic community.

As the successful candidate, you will hold a doctoral qualification or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline, with strong econometric skills and proficiency in statistical programming using software such as Stata, R, or Python. Experience with administrative data and knowledge of advanced techniques, including structural econometrics and machine learning, is highly desirable.

You are well-organised and capable of managing multiple tasks to meet deadlines, with excellent written and verbal communication skills for producing clear research papers and reports. A collaborative approach, strong computer literacy, and an understanding of confidentiality and data handling principles are essential to thrive in this role.
