Research Scientist Position

A 3 year project investigating PRMT1 and RNA binding proteins in the replication stress response in lung cancer is available within the lab of Prof. Clare Davies.

The post holder is expected to undertake novel, cutting-edge, laboratory-based research within the field of protein arginine methylation and tumour cell biology, specified within an MRC funded research programme. They should have experience of working with PRMT enzymes and the replication stress response, and ideally RNA binding proteins.

The post holder will:

• Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids
• Operate within area of specialism
• Analyse and interpret research findings and results
• Contribute to generating funding
• Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below:

• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding
• Analyse and interpret data
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
• Present research results through publication or other recognised forms of output, e.g. peer-reviewed journals, reports and conference presentations at a national/international level
• Contribute to the work of the research team as a whole; through dialogue with colleagues, generation of ideas, contributing to preparation of grant applications, advising on study design, problem solving etc
• Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
• Keep abreast of the literature and maintain a good working knowledge of the background and current developments in the field of the project
• Build internal and external contacts and participate in networks for the exchange of information and for future collaboration
• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
• Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person specification:

• First degree in area of specialism and a PhD (or in viva awaiting status) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• At least one authorship published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
• Practical experience of:
• Mammalian cell culture
• Single molecule DNA fiber analysis
• SIRF and other PLA-based assays
• Working with mouse models of cancer (PIL holder)
• Microscopy-based laboratory techniques (including immunofluorescence)
• Western blotting and immunoprecipitation
• RNA-sequencing and their analysis
• Extensive lentiviral experience to generate genetically altered cell lines
• Molecular biology (including primer design, qPCR, DNA/RNA isolation, cloning, mutagenesis, DNA sequencing, expression plasmid generation)
• Design and implementation of experiments for Mass Spectrometry
• High level analytical capability
• The ability to work and think independently and to significantly contribute to the planning of a programme of scientific research (critically required with demonstrable evidence)
• Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods (see above) and ability to contribute to developing new ones
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
• Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
