The Research Fellow will be leading work related to the measurement and estimation of impacts on states, trade and transport services arising from policy measures, as well as generally assisting the group's modelling around shipping emissions and shipping's energy transition. The foci of the work will be both national/domestic, regional and global shipping activity.
The research fellow will be based in the Shipping and Oceans research group at the UCL Energy Institute, led by Dr Tristan Smith and Dr Nishatabbas Rehmatulla.
The successful applicant will work in a multi-disciplinary team and where possible also support several ongoing commercial and policy consultancy projects. They should have an enthusiasm for working in multidisciplinary environments alongside physical scientists, social scientists and economists to achieve joint research goals, as well as supporting MSc programmes and PhD students in the shipping group.
This post is available from 1 April 2026 and is funded for 12 months in the first instance; further funding to support the post may become available.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, or be close to completion, or commensurate research experience, in any one of the following fields: data analytics, quantitative methods, mathematics, engineering or other relevant discipline.
The successful candidate will also have research experience, which includes programming (eg Python, R, MATLAB etc), experience in interpreting data and providing analysis to stakeholders/governments in low-income countries, and at least 3 year's experience in the application of large-scale multi-dimensional geospatial datasets to represent worldwide economic/maritime/transport activities.
