UCL's Department of Computer Science (CS) is a top-ranked Computer Science Department in the UK. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluation, UCL Computer Science was ranked second in the UK for research power and first in England.
The UCL Hawkes Institute combines methodological researchers from the Departments of CS and Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering (MPBE) with biomedical and clinical groups in the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The interface of engineering with medicine, where Hawkes specialises, is a dynamic and exciting place to do cutting-edge research. Hawkes is a world leader in medical imaging research, with particular strengths in artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to healthcare. The candidate will join the Machine-learning, AI, Neuro Imaging Focusing On Longevity and Dementia (MANIFOLD lab), led by Prof James Cole, and work closely with collaborators at the Amsterdam University Medical Center.
The role entails working at the UCL Hawkes Institute, collaborating closely with the Amsterdam University Medical Center, to work on a multi-cohort arterial spin labelling analysis project, using normative models to establish normal cerebral blood flow trajectories across the lifespan and determine deviations from cardiovascular and neurodegenerative pathology.
The role will involve interacting with several large arterial spin labelling imaging datasets, cardiovascular- and neurodegenerative-related clinical and biomarker data (including positron emission tomography scans), applying normative statistical models. Open-source software will be developed and implemented in ExploreASL. In addition, the staff member will prepare project reports and presentations, write manuscripts for conference/journal submission, and supervise post-graduate students.
The role is funded until 31st March 2027 in the first instance.
The role will be in-person, onsite based at High Holborn.
The candidate will have a PhD in either computer science or medical imaging and requires skills in managing and processing neuroimaging data. Experience with arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI is essential. While technical skills are important for the role, coordination ability will also be crucial as the role will involve managing large imaging datasets, running data processing tasks and leading manuscript preparation. Excellent internal and external communication skills are required, and demonstrable evidence of an interest in translational research will be valued.
