Research Specialist in Single-cell Chromatin Genomics

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations. Our laboratory is located at the Science for Life Laboratory in the Karolinska Institute campus in Solna. SciLifeLab is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to one of the largest sequencing cluster in Europe.

Our group combines experimental and computational work, and aims to develop and apply novel genome-wide techniques to address fundamental biological questions with medical implications. We are especially interested in how subtle variations in gene expression can lead to differential cellular phenotypes and are passionate about RNA biology. You will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and combine the development of state-of-the art genome-wide approaches with the molecular dissection of fundamental biological problems.

Description of the Subject Area

Gene expression is a fundamental process that controls cellular identity and plasticity. Remarkably, heterogeneous gene expression is often found within isogenic cell populations. In the context of cancer this often leads to the emergence of persister cells able to escape treatment. Understanding the molecular mechanism underpinning this diversity, including the crosstalk between transcription factors, is crucial for comprehending how this diversity arises. Despite the emergence of many high-resolution technologies in the last decade, we still don't fully grasp how different regulatory signals are integrated at the chromatin and single-cell levels. Deconvolving this complex crosstalk has significant potential to illuminate our fundamental understanding of gene expression and unlock novel therapeutic avenues in cancer and beyond.

Your Mission

The research specialist position focuses on the development of innovative genome-wide approaches to study transcription factor interaction at single cell level, and how different regulatory signals are integrated at chromatin level.

The candidate is expected to lead technology development and data interpretation. This will include the development of new genomic technologies and significant contribution to hypothesis generation, biological interpretation and orthogonal validation. The candidate will conduct original research, assist in the supervision of junior colleagues, and acquire the necessary experimental and computational skills required for successful completion of the project. The candidate is expected to communicate scientific findings by contributing to scientific publications and attending relevant meetings. Further responsibilities include supporting laboratory management and coordination, and assisting the group leader with administrative duties such as grant writing and scientific reporting. The ideal candidate will participate in the general duties of the team and communicate effectively with scientists from diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. The working language is English.

Eligibility Requirements

For employment as Research Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements stated in the Guidelines for non-teaching positions at Karolinska Institutet are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented postdoctoral research experience.

Requirements for the position:

• A strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development, as well as novel and creative thinking abilities.
• Extensive experience in Chromatin biology with high impact publications in the area.
• Experience in transcription regulation in humans.
• Extensive experience in CRISPR based technologies.
• Proven hands-on experience in designing, optimizing, and validating genome wide approaches to study gene e.g., ATAC-Seq, CUT&TAG, CUT&RUN, 10X scRNA-Seq, scATAC-Seq…)
• Extensive experience in NGS method development.
• Experience in bioinformatics and NGS data analysis.
• Proven track record for grant writing and significant independent funding acquisition.
• Experience in Master and PhD co-supervision.
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in teams.

Meritorious for the position:

• Hands-on experience with Illumina sequencing.
• Experience in science communication.
