Research and education at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo) addresses fundamental and applied questions on the Earth's past, present and future climate and environment, including people's interactions with the natural world and consequences for human wellbeing. MGeo advances and deploys cutting-edge methods, models and technologies in environmental science, quaternary sciences, bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, Geographic Information Science (GIS), and computational science for health and environment, to study processes spanning from the microscopic to the planetary, across all time scales.

Subject description:

Forests play an important role in reaching the climate targets as they can act as natural carbon sinks. However, human interventions can significantly impact the forests' ability to contribute to greenhouse gas reductions. This position will contribute to research on disturbance processes and variability in the growth of boreal forests. The researcher will work with flux tower measurements of CO2, CH4 and N2O, and spectral measurements, including raw data processing and postprocessing. The data will contribute to one or two scientific articles.

Qualification requirements:

• A PhD or equivalent research qualification in physical geography, environmental sciences, or forest ecology
• Previous research experience in greenhouse gas fluxes in boreal ecosystems
• Previous research experience in processing of spectral data from towers or aerial platforms
• Solid understanding of disturbance effects on greenhouse gas exchange in forest ecosystems
• A publication record commensurate with the career stage
• Excellent English written and oral communication skills, ability to tackle research problems and to work in an interdisciplinary team but also independently, and to complete activities on time

Assessment criteria and other qualifications:

• In-depth background knowledge and working experience in greenhouse gas budgeting and carbon cycling, with a focus on boreal forest ecosystems
• Experience with data processing software for eddy-covariance data (EddyPro, REddyProc)
• Excellent numeric and analytical problem-solving skills, including time series analysis and statistics (e.g. mixed effects modelling)
• Capacity to develop computer code and experience with programming languages (Matlab, Python, R) and geospatial tools (e.g. ArcGIS)
• Demonstrated skills in handling and analysis of large datasets

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment:

This is a 100% full-time, fixed-term employment (SÄVA) 5§ p1 LAS for 7 months, starting in May 2026.
