Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
Are you interested in working with molecular biophysics, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, beneficial working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.
The department is divided into seven research programs, each focusing on different areas within cell and molecular biology. The scientific foundation of our work lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other fields such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, and physics. The department has more than 200 employees, including around 60 PhD students.
The work in Michael Landreh's research group focuses on the development and application of protein engineering and mass spectrometry to understand the structure–function relationships of challenging protein systems, including membrane proteins and amyloids, which play key roles in cancer and neurodegeneration. The laboratory includes facilities for protein production and characterization as well as cutting-edge mass spectrometry. We collaborate with the laboratories of Associate Professor Axel Abelein and Professor Marie Arsenian-Henriksson at Karolinska Institutet, which routinely use advanced live-cell microscopy, cell sorting, and structural analysis to study molecular mechanisms. This enables us to combine structural biology with cellular disease models to study protein function from the molecular to the organismal level.
The successful candidate will characterize phase-separated protein complexes. Using various molecular biology and biophysical techniques—primarily mass spectrometry and mass photometry, as well as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-electron lasers—we will investigate protein structures and interactions and how they are affected by phase separation. The focus of the project is to continue ongoing work in the group on mass spectrometry methods to study proteins under conditions as close to physiological as possible. The researcher will express and purify proteins, monitor their structure and interactions, and correlate structural changes with biological activity. The project is a collaboration with the groups of Axel Abelein and Marie Arsenian-Henriksson at Karolinska Institutet.
A PhD in medical science or a foreign degree considered equivalent to a PhD in medical science. The researcher is expected to have documented experience in protein analysis and membrane biophysics. Demonstrated expertise in biophysics and molecular biology—including protein design and production in bacteria, as well as electron microscopy—is highly important. Documented experience in protein production, mass photometry, free-electron lasers, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Experience with computational analysis such as simulations and machine learning is a plus. Great importance is placed on interpersonal skills, willingness to work in a team, and excellent proficiency in English.
The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
For further information about the position, please contact: Michael Landreh, Professor of Molecular Biophysics, +46 76 292 59 29, michael.landreh@icm.uu.se. Please submit your application by 9 April 2026, UFV-PA 2026/943.
