Researcher in Synthesis and Analysis of Alicyclic Carboxylic Acids

The Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people, including around 45 PhD students, work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. The international environment and good opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations enables PhD students at the department to participate in relevant research projects and prepare for an international research career.

Both environmental and medicinal chemistry require pure synthetic compounds, and target molecules often contain cyclic motifs and heteroatom-containing functional groups. In this researcher position, we require a synthetic organic chemist with experience synthesising organic compounds featuring these groups, in particular in relation to probing putative structures relevant to environmental systems.

Duties: The researcher will be responsible for synthesizing organic compounds in various projects related to environmental and medicinal chemistry and assessing their purity using NMR. In the case of environmental projects, the researcher will be responsible for conducting high resolution LC-MS/MS analysis on synthesized compounds to determine fragmentation patterns for comparison with natural mixtures.

Requirements: It is a requirement to have experience in standard synthesis, interpreting NMR spectra and LC-MS/MS fragmentation spectra to assess synthesized compound purity and composition, and to have experience with synthesis of carbocycles.

Additional qualifications: It is advantageous to have experience operating liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry instrumentation and to have worked in a research laboratory for at least three years after completion of the Ph.D. It is advantageous to have experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

About the employment: The employment is a temporary position, 6 months. Scope of employment 80 %. Starting date May 1st or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
