When you're part of the team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you'll do important work, like helping customers in finding cures for cancer, protecting the environment or making sure our food is safe. Your work will have real-world impact, and you'll be supported in achieving your career goals. Our staff members are committed to making a difference in our organization, for our client partners and the patients we serve. We seek individuals with proven competencies and strong character to help lead our organization now and into the future.
Our co-op participants receive professional mentorship and leadership development opportunities to support future career growth with us. Whether you're looking to come back for a repeat co-op, transition into one of our Leadership Development Programs, or pursue a full-time position post-graduation, our team is here to support your next step!
A day in the Life: Every intern in our group will be assigned a PhD scientist to mentor them. Our goal is to develop your scientific skill while completing active research in our lab. Activities will include one or more of the following tasks as determined by project priorities as well as intern capabilities and interests. Interns trained by us develop valuable high-tech skills and unique knowledge in the area of electron emission.
Experiments and lab work: The majority of our work involves setting up and running experiments. Typical equipment you will learn to use includes: high voltage power supplies, low current ammeters, ultra-high vacuum systems, and other electronic lab equipment. We occasionally work with liquid nitrogen in cold experiments.
Examples of experimental activities: Performing periodic thermal imaging pyrometry and monitoring of ongoing experiments Gathering I/V curve data on running emitters Performing noise measurements on cold-field and Schottky electron emitters Conducting energy spread measurements and/or brightness measurements Using our SEMs to image and perform surface analysis, and from time to time using FIB systems to mill, cut or shape surfaces Running computer simulations thermal transport, electrical transport, and/or electron emission
Development, analysis and reporting results: The key to becoming a good scientist is the ability to analyze and communicate results with the advanced technology groups we work with. You will be developing your skill to present work accurately and concisely, and will present at one of our internal seminars. Examples of development activities include: Analyze experimental data e.g. to determine optimal performance from emitter characteristics Assist in development of data acquisition and analysis software e.g. curve fitting, regression, image processing Develop and test new laboratory and instrument control software Develop and characterize automated electron source control software Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment as needed Work with scientists and engineers to diagnose and repair equipment issues
Compensation & Relocation: Our Research & Development co-ops offer an hourly rate between $21.50 – $28.75 dependent upon the location you are supporting (aligned to respective cost-of-living guidelines). Additionally, a relocation stipend is offered in the amount of $5,000 if necessary. Student must be located 50+ miles away from the physical location of co-op to be eligible for the relocation stipend.
How will you get here? Master's student completing an Engineering or Life Sciences-related degree. Physics, chemistry, math, computer science or related fields are also accepted. 0+ years of work experience required; previous related internships preferred. Consistent track record of results demonstrating integrity, innovation, involvement, and intensity. Energized through championing change, driven in getting results, and savvy in navigating ambiguity. Excellent interpersonal communication
To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require sponsorship (current or future) for employment visa status.
