Scientist I, Automation – High Throughput Antibody Production Full-time NEW

Job Title

The Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine Department at AbbVie, Worcester, MA is seeking a highly motivated engineer to join a dynamic team supporting biologics drug discovery and biologics engineering.

The role involves making an impact to drug discovery through technology innovation and custom engineering. You will help build automated data generation capabilities for AI/ML platforms, programming robotic integration, liquid handling methods, and data processing scripts. Additionally, you will push the cutting edge of automation with custom device prototyping.

The ideal candidate should have strong experience in lab instrument automation, CAD design, and scripting to accelerate and streamline antibody production and characterization workflows.

Qualifications

Educational Background:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, with typically 5 years (BS) or typically 2 years (MS) of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a relevant technical field.

Skills and Experiences:

• Proficiency in hardware and software operation and maintenance of liquid handlers (Hamilton, Lynx, Tecan) and robot arms.
• Strong expertise with programming for instrument and data capture (Python, C#, Arduino).
• Expert knowledge in custom design and production of components/labware to support protein production automation. Familiar with CAD design software (Onshape, Solidworks). Hands-on experience in 3D printers (Bambu, Prusa, Formlab, etc.).
• Experience in integration of actuators and sensors for lab instruments using microcontrollers is highly valued.
• Knowledge of general biologics production is preferred.
• Keen ability to initiate the automation discussion and collaborate across the broad BGM department.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

• Proactively think and discuss novel ideas to improve the production and characterization workflows.
• Build relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of the team to enable higher performance.
• Learn fast, grasp the “essence” and can change the course quickly where indicated.
• Continuous sitting for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8-hour day)

• The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

Where We Work

Role is exclusively performed at a site or office and onsite presence is required. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
