Senior Animal Technologist

We're seeking an experienced Senior Animal Technologist to take a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of a designated animal facility unit, supporting our world-class biomedical research while upholding the highest ethical and professional standards.

This is an excellent opportunity to combine hands-on technical expertise, leadership, and collaboration with researchers and directly contribute to scientific progress and animal wellbeing.

Reporting to the Facility Manager, you will lead and support a team of Animal Technologists and Technicians, ensuring the delivery of high-quality laboratory animals and services that meet researchers' needs. You will play a key role in promoting exemplary animal welfare practices while maintaining compliance with legislation, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

Key responsibilities include:

• Lead the daily operations of a designated animal facility unit, ensure excellence in animal care and welfare
• Oversee animal husbandry, breeding programs, and colony management, maintaining genetic integrity and optimal health status
• Monitor and analyse animal records, identifying risks, raising issues and making recommendations to ensure ongoing availability of animals for research programs
• Supervise, train and mentor staff, including work allocation, performance monitoring, and operational problem solving
• Partner closely with researchers to understand project needs, manage supply and demand, and deliver a high standard of customer service
• Perform a wide range of laboratory animal techniques, including blood and tissue collection, injections, drug and anaesthetic administration, identification, vaccinations and euthanasia
• Drive continuous improvement in animal welfare, environmental enrichment, health and safety, hygiene and procedural efficiency, including developing and updating SOPs
• Ensure strict compliance with Victorian legislation, regulatory bodies and the Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
• Maintain clear, professional communication with colleagues, researchers, trades and other stakeholders
• Coordinate inductions, rosters, vaccination requirements and provide input into facility maintenance and renovations

What you'll bring:

Qualifications and experience:

• Diploma of Applied Science (Animal Technology), or progress toward completion with relevant laboratory animal facility experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Technical expertise:

• Extensive hands-on experience with laboratory animal breeding systems, husbandry, and advanced animal techniques
• Strong understanding of laboratory animal diseases and ethical animal care
• Proven ability to perform technical procedures including blood collection, injections, anaesthesia, drug administration and euthanasia

Knowledge & compliance:

• Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, including: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (Vic) and Regulations 2019, OGTR and DAWE requirements, Industry Codes and permits
• Experience developing, implementing and maintaining SOPs

Leadership & communication:

• Demonstrated team leadership and supervisory experience
• Excellent organisational and time-management skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with researchers, colleagues and stakeholders

Administration & systems:

• High attention to detail with strong computer literacy and animal record-keeping experience
