The advertised position will be placed at the Division of Applied Mathematics (AM) within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS). The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and the Faculty of Science at Lund University, where the mentioned division formally belongs to LTH.

Research at CMS currently covers areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, as well as computer vision and machine learning. The department has approximately 150 employees, including 21 full professors and almost 50 senior researchers, as well as around 50 doctoral students. The AM division conducts broad research in applied mathematics, with an emphasis on numerical analysis for partial differential equations (PDEs) and modelling with PDEs. Each year, LTH admits more than 1000 new students to its engineering programmes, and mathematics education constitutes a central part of the five-year curriculum. The AM division is one of the three divisions responsible for large-scale mathematics teaching at LTH and is also responsible for teaching in numerical analysis. Undergraduate teaching in mathematics is primarily conducted in Swedish. Therefore, newly appointed teachers are expected, during an agreed establishment period, to acquire sufficient proficiency in Swedish to participate in all first-cycle mathematics courses at LTH.

Applied mathematics with focus on numerical analysis.

Subject Description

The applicant's research focus must be a specialisation in numerical analysis for partial differential equations (PDEs). The specialisation should both strengthen the division's current research in the field and contribute with new perspectives. In particular, it should relate to one or more of the following areas:

• Theory for spatial discretisations of PDEs
• Analysis and design of domain decomposition methods
• Numerical analysis for stochastic PDEs
• Numerical analysis for multiphysics problems that couple different types of PDEs for waves, heat, elasticity, flows, etc.

The application must clearly state how the applicant's current research relates to the division's research environment in numerical analysis, and how the applicant plans to contribute to its future development.

Work Duties

Work duties include:

• Research within the subject area.
• Teaching in the first, second, and third cycles of studies. Teaching in the first cycle will be conducted in Swedish.
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
• Actively seeking external research funding.
• Collaboration with industry and wider society.
• Administration related to the work duties listed above.
• Development of courses, teaching materials, and pedagogical practice.

Qualification Requirements

Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

• A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
• Demonstrated teaching expertise.
• Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Assessment Criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, assessing research and teaching expertise equally.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

• A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
• Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop, and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
• An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
• An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
• A general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional Requirements

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Significant documented research experience (e.g. from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.
• Proven ability to secure research funding from external funding bodies through competitive grants.
• Collaborative skills, initiative, and the ability to solve work tasks independently.

Other Qualifications

Experience relative to career length in participating in doctoral student supervision towards a doctoral degree. Experience in academic leadership, such as serving as the principal investigator (PI) for a research grant. Documented experience of well-executed large-scale teaching in first-cycle mathematics. Experience in administrative roles, such as leadership positions.

The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.
