We are seeking to appoint a Senior Researcher to join the Epidemic Diseases Clinical Research Group (ERGO) within the Pandemic Sciences Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine. Led by Professor Sir Peter Horby, ERGO is an internationally recognized clinical research group focused on emerging and epidemic infections. The group undertakes clinical epidemiology, diagnostic and pathogenesis studies, and clinical trials, and plays a coordinating and collaborative role in major international research programs including ISARIC, HPRU-EZI, UK-PHRST and ECRAID. Reporting to Professor Sir Peter Horby, you will lead a specialist grant-funded research program contributing to the scientific direction and outputs of the wider group.
You will lead a program of research on acute respiratory infections, formulating and refining research questions within a defined area of the wider scientific theme. You will manage research resources and budgets, contribute to the strategic direction and standards of the group, and develop competitive grant applications to generate research income. The role includes authoring research articles, reviews and book chapters, presenting findings at scientific conferences and seminars, supervising research students, contributing to teaching, and representing the research group at external meetings with sponsors, stakeholders, national agencies and professional bodies. You will also undertake collaborative projects with partner institutions and participate in public engagement activities as required.
It is essential that you hold a relevant PhD/DPhil with significant post-qualification research experience and have sufficient specialist knowledge to develop research projects and methodologies in the field of epidemic and emerging infections. You will have an established (inter)national reputation with a strong publication record, experience managing research budgets and securing grant funding, and the ability to lead and motivate a research team. Extensive experience working in low- and middle-income settings, a sound understanding of research ethics, Good Clinical Practice and research governance frameworks, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You must demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure and manage complex organizational and collaborative environments.
