Biologics Discovery Scientist

The Biologics Discovery Sciences group at AbbVie are seeking an accomplished scientist who will make substantial contributions to the conception, execution and communication of antibody discovery strategies in a highly collaborative environment. A primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to develop and execute research strategies to enable the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies for AbbVie's core therapeutics areas. They will be responsible for the design and execution of in vitro display technologies for lead antibody identification/optimization. In addition, it is expected that the candidate will utilize their expertise to generate internal and external collaborations as necessary to further program goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving antibody discovery programs within a multidisciplinary research group in an exciting, fast-paced team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Make substantial contributions to the conception, execution and communication of antibody discovery strategies in a highly collaborative environment
• Implement novel selection strategies and build industry-leading libraries for discovery and screening of therapeutic candidates
• Identify and solve technical problems independently, conceive and implement innovative research ideas
• Leverage expertise to develop and implement research to gain a detailed mechanistic understanding of the molecular pharmacology of therapeutic molecules
• Utilize computational skills independently and in partnership with AI/ML and Digital Transformation teams to amplify in vitro technology work and build into AbbVie's AI/ML infrastructure
• Provide project updates, analyses and advice to cross-functional teams and senior management
• Present original work internally across departments and at internal and external scientific conferences; may author or co-author peer-reviewed scientific papers or patents
• Ensure consistency and quality of technical reports
• Ability to engage internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research
• Serve as a biologics lead for cross-functional teams, and contribute scientific insights into multiple projects across various therapeutic areas; recognized and sought out as an expert in discovery and engineering of therapeutic molecules

Qualifications:

• PhD, MS, or BS degree in Biochemistry, Biochemical engineering or related disciplines with typically 0-3 (PhD), 8+ (MS), or 10+ (BS) years of experience
• Hands-on experience with in vitro antibody discovery display technologies (e.g., phage, yeast, mammalian)
• Extensive experience and up-to-date knowledge in antibody engineering and optimization (e.g., humanization, Fc optimization) best practices
• Antibody/ antibody fragment library design, construction
• Strong molecular biology skills
• Familiarity with sequence analysis tools (Geneious, PipeBio, GeneData)
• Application of computational tools within in vitro workflows to advance efficiency
• Experience with flow cytometry
• Ability to explore and develop new approaches to further advance innovative in vitro discovery and screening technologies
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Team player with the ability to operate in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment with functional and therapeutic areas
• Adaptability to rapid changes in project priorities and timelines
• Recognized in the scientific community through a record of peer-reviewed publications and patents preferred
• Highly developed leadership and communication skills
• Keen ability to engage internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research

Pay Range: $94000 – 178500 USD

Where We Work

Role is exclusively performed at a site or office and onsite presence is required. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
