UCL is a radically different university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, we were the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and the first to welcome women to university education. Today, UCL has over 50,000 students and 18,000 staff, is one of the world's top ten universities, and is recognised as one of the most successful research institutions globally, consistently ranked in the QS World University Rankings (2010–2024) and placed 2nd in the UK for research power and 1st in London (REF 2021).
The Vice-Provost Health Office leads on developing and implementing UCL's health strategy, coordination of academic health activities and expertise across faculties, and UCL's relationship with the wider health system and health partners. Within the Vice Provost Health Office, UCL Health of the Public provides a virtual structure that brings together and accelerates cross-university research and education aimed at improving population health and reducing health inequalities.
Please note this is a 12 month fixed term contract or secondment role. The post is available from 10th June, with flexibility depending on candidate notice periods.
We are looking for a proactive Strategy and Programme Manager to help drive the delivery of UCL Health of the Public's vision. In this varied and collaborative role, you will work closely with the Director and Head of Health of the Public to translate high-level strategic commitments into a coherent programme of activity. You will lead the development and management of a rolling portfolio of projects, ensuring that initiatives align with the ambitions of the Health of the Public Strategy. A key part of the role will involve identifying research and training funding opportunities, supporting academic colleagues with the development of strategically important funding applications, maintaining and strengthening UCL Health of the Public communities, and identifying synergies between Faculty priorities and Health of the Public aims to inform an impactful programme of engagement. You will also develop effective networks with partners beyond the University, and raise the profile of UCL Health of the Public nationally and globally.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working across disciplines, building relationships, and contributing to initiatives that enable a thriving, well-connected research and education ecosystem. The role is offered on a hybrid basis, with the option to work remotely for up to 60 per cent of the week.
We are looking for someone who is strategic, adaptable and motivated by the opportunity to support a vibrant, cross-disciplinary research community. You should hold a degree or equivalent experience and bring a strong understanding of the organisational culture within a large university or similar research organisation. Experience supporting research funding applications will be essential. You will also have the confidence to engage with a wide range of academic disciplines, to support diverse research proposals and initiatives.
Excellent organisational ability is key, as you will be managing multiple priorities and deadlines with independence and sound judgement. You should be an effective communicator, able to build strong relationships across the University and with external partners. Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn new systems quickly, are also important. Above all, you will be proactive, flexible and collaborative, with the initiative and enthusiasm to bring people together around shared goals and support the success of UCL Health of the Public.
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
As London's Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world's talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong.
We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL's workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women. Our department is working towards an Athena SWAN award. We are committed to advancing gender equality within our department.
