PROFESSOR IN EXPERIMENTAL OR THEORETICAL PHYSICS OF QUANTUM MATERIALS Full-time NEW
The Université de Sherbrooke is seeking applications for two positions as professor in the field of quantum materials (experimental or theoretical), or at the interface between this field and quantum information physics. These are full-time tenure-track positions in the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Physics at Université de Sherbrooke has 19 professors specializing in quantum information and quantum materials, in both experimental and theoretical fields. The professors in the Department of Physics are members of Institut quantique, a research institute with nearly 40 research groups and more than 300 members from the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Humanities, and the School of Management.
Current research topics in quantum materials at Institut quantique include:
- Unconventional superconductivity
- High-temperature superconductors
- Topological materials
- Two-dimensional materials
- Many-body theory
- Numerical simulations of strongly correlated materials
- General theory of strongly correlated materials
- Exotic magnetism
- Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)
- Nuclear magnetic resonance
- Growth of thin films and multilayer structures
- Electronic transport at very low temperatures
- Spin systems based on dopants or crystal defects
- Quantum transport in mesoscopic systems and quantum materials
- Magnetomechanics and levitating mechanical resonators
Research at the interface between quantum materials and quantum information physics is also an important part of the research conducted at the IQ and the Department of Physics.
The new professor will benefit from a dynamic research environment consisting of:
- Collaborative spaces in the new Quantum Institute building, inaugurated in 2022;
- Several multi-user platforms for experimental physics: clean rooms for nanofabrication, cryogenics services with helium recovery, and quantum circuit measurement and control equipment.
- Classical and quantum computing platforms: local computing clusters, computing resources from the Canadian Digital Research Alliance and Calcul Québec, access to IBM Q and other online quantum computing services.
- Several networks: the Regroupement Québécois sur les Matériaux de Pointe (RQMP), l’INstitut TRansdisciplinaire d’Information Quantique (INTRIQ), and the Quantum Frontiers IRL with the CNRS (France).
From the Quantum Science and Technology Innovation Zone, an ecosystem of quantum technology startups located in Sherbrooke.
DESIRED PROFILE
The desired profile must have postdoctoral experience or research experience in industry.
FUNCTIONS
- Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Develop fundamental or applied research activities.
- Supervise graduate and doctoral students.
- Participate in university life.
- Contribute to community service.
- Conduct cutting-edge research leading to the advancement of knowledge in quantum materials physics or at the interface between this field and quantum information physics.
- An institutional program to support learning French is available to all professors who wish to participate.
REQUIREMENTS
- Hold a doctorate in physics or a discipline deemed relevant.
- Have a marked interest in university pedagogy and teaching as well as for research, development, and innovation.
- Have a marked interest in research (disciplinary, interdisciplinary) and in the transfer of knowledge and innovation.
- Demonstrate good ability to supervise graduate students.
- Have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals of international standing, testifying to an excellent research record.
- Demonstrate skills in establishing and maintaining good interpersonal relations, a sense of collaboration, and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrate qualities of leadership and initiative as well as outstanding skills in communicating and effectively and harmoniously interacting with various internal and external partners.
- To be able to comply with the requirements of responsible research conduct.
- Have the ability to teach in French or to achieve this ability in a reasonable period of time.
The working conditions are governed by the collective agreements in effect.
Regular, full-time, tenure-track position.
Anticipated start date: June 1, 2026.
