Postdoctoral Associates in Large‑Scale Image Informatics for Cancer Imaging Full-time
The Biomedical Optical Imaging Laboratory at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign invites applications for a postdoctoral associate to spearhead research at the interface of quantitative phase imaging (QPI), artificial intelligence, and cancer biology. Our group integrates high-throughput super‑resolution microscopy, highly multiplexed fluorescence imaging, and mesoscale QPI to reveal previously inaccessible cellular and molecular dynamics in tumors. Responsibilities
- Implement and optimize large‑scale image‑informatics pipelines that link QPI‑derived morphodynamics with molecular signatures to predict therapeutic resistance.
- Develop and benchmark machine‑learning and deep‑learning algorithms for cell segmentation, tracking, and phenotype classification across multi‑modal, high‑volume datasets.
- Design and perform quantitative analyses that correlate imaging readouts with genomic, epigenomic, and clinical variables in collaboration with biologists, oncologists, and data scientists.
- Lead dissemination of findings through high‑impact publications, conference presentations, and open‑source code releases.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary grant proposals and mentor graduate and undergraduate trainees working on imaging and computation projects.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. (or equivalent) in bioengineering, electrical engineering, biophysics, or a closely related discipline, conferred by the start date.
- Demonstrated expertise in image analysis and machine learning, evidenced by first‑author publications in reputable journals or conferences.
- Proficiency in scientific programming (Python or MATLAB) and deep‑learning frameworks, with practical experience handling large‑scale imaging datasets.
- Solid understanding of optical microscopy principles and an ability to communicate effectively with experimentalists and clinicians.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to manage parallel projects to timely completion.
Preferred qualifications
- Prior experience with quantitative phase imaging, multiplexed fluorescence imaging, or other label‑free optical modalities.
- Background in cancer biology, 3D cell culture, spatial omics, or clinical translational research.
- Familiarity with high‑performance computing environments and reproducible data‑science workflows.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. The anticipated start date is as soon as possible but negotiable.
