We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team in the Department
of Physics and Astronomy at Western University, London, Ontario. This position will focus
on optical satellite tracking and developing novel methods to understand and mitigate the
impact of human-made objects in space.
About the Project
The project involves cutting-edge research in optical satellite tracking and the analysis of
satellite brightness on a massive scale. A primary focus will be on tracking 10 cm-sized
space debris and understanding the impact of mega-constellations on astronomical
observations and the night sky. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing
novel methods of orbit determination for these objects. This research is crucial for
addressing the growing challenges posed by space debris and satellite brightness to
astronomical observations and the overall space environment. You can find more details
about the projects on the Department webpage: https://physics.uwo.ca/graduate/future_students/index.html
Requirements
• A completed or near-complete Master’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, Aerospace
Engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong emphasis on celestial
mechanics or orbital dynamics.
• Ability to meet Western University admission requirements: https://grad.uwo.ca/admissions/apply.html
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to creatively address complex
challenges.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
• Proficiency in scientific computing and programming, especially Python, is
essential.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for effective reporting, presenting, and
collaborating.
