PhD Position in AI-Empowered Intelligent Energy Systems Full-time

Shiyu Yang’s group (https://gr.xjtu.edu.cn/web/yangshiyu/home_en) at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is seeking highly motivated PhD students in Electrical Engineering under the 2026 Doctoral Program for Outstanding International Undergraduates.

XJTU is a top-tier Chinese research university, a member of the prestigious C9 League (China’s Ivy League), and ranked Top 10 nationwide in the Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities (2025). In 2024, the university achieved the Class A+ rating in the national certification of higher education quality for international students.

 

Research Focus

Our group investigates AI-Empowered Intelligent Energy Systems, including (but not limited to):

  • Scientific AI and Model Predictive Control Approaches
  • Smart Buildings and Power Systems
  • Integrated Energy Systems and Energy Internet
  • Demand Response and Flexibility

We aim to address key scientific questions related to Energy Sustainability and Resilience using Scientific AI and Optimal Control approaches, and to nurture future scientists with strong innovation ability and research independence.

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be non-Chinese citizens, physically and mentally healthy
  • Be under 40 years of age
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree from universities with subjects ranked Top 200 worldwide, or from reputable universities in BRI partner countries
  • Have a minimum 80% overall GPA
  • Certificate of Language Proficiency (Transcript of IELTS 6.0 and above, TOEFL 85 and above. Other English language proficiency certificates are also acceptable upon approval by XJTU.)
  • (Optional) Additional preferred qualifications:
    • Experience in machine learning, Python/Matlab programming, and energy modelling
    • Research experience or published work
