For my doctoral dissertation, I investigated how patterns of digital technology use relates to academic outcomes in primary school children, and if executive functions and school engagement might mediate that relationship. Throughout my doctorate, I acquired comprehensive training in the design and implementation of empirical research. With the guidance of my supervisors, I familiarised myself from the ground up with the literature on digital technologies and psychology, developed specific assessment instruments, and coordinated a team of undergraduate students who collaborated in data collection. This work was carried out in educational institutions with which I established direct contact and formal collaboration agreements. In addition, I gained experience with a range of data analysis methods and worked closely with my supervisors on the challenge of operationalising and analysing digital technology use in a multidimensional way, avoiding reliance on single indicators such as screen time.
