The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level for a clinician-scientist.
Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada's premier academic medical institutions and is recognized among the world's top 100 medical schools. The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine is one of the largest Gastroenterology and Hepatology centers in Canada. Its leading-edge research program is supported by more than $3 M annual research funding highlighted by the Centre of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) and the GILDR clinical trials unit. The Division offers state of the art specialized multidisciplinary programs for patient care in fields such as chronic liver disease, liver transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease, advanced therapeutic endoscopy, enteral and parenteral nutrition services as well as gastrointestinal motility testing services. The Division's large education portfolio includes all levels of medical education as well as learning programs for allied health professions.
Key accountabilities of the Academic position in Gastroenterology will include research, education, clinical innovation and administration. The position will involve at least 50% in research, 10% of protected time for education with the remainder spent on clinical work and administration which will significantly enhance the clinical services and academic productivity in our division.
The successful candidate will be a medical doctor (MD) or equivalent with certification in Gastroenterology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The qualified individual will require a PhD in research and extensive experience in laboratory research. The candidate will be expected to establish a translational research program focused on understanding the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with the goal of discovering novel biomarkers, drug targets or prevention strategies. The candidate must also have clinical expertise and have completed an advanced fellowship in the management of inflammatory bowel disease. The position will involve a significant, contractually specified portion protected time for research, with the remainder spent on clinical work, teaching and administration.
