Position description
The Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles, invites applications for Assistant Adjunct Professorships. Appointments are normally for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. The teaching load is typically six one-quarter courses per year.
The department is particularly interested in hiring applicants who will contribute primarily to fulfill teaching needs, and have a limited responsibility for research activities. Assistant Adjunct Professors on this track will participate in training activities for teaching and will join efforts to transform instruction at the lower and upper division levels, and also engage in university and public service consistent with their assignments. Additionally, the assistant adjunct will carry out work connected to innovating in teaching and evaluating the effectiveness of new teaching approaches. This work includes creating new approaches that change structuring of classes, personnel utilization and incorporating new resources such as AI, as well as either individually, or in collaboration with department faculty or other university units measuring the effectiveness of these changes.
The ideal candidate has wide professional experience in mathematical education, extending outside of lecturing in R1 math departments, and will play a role in integrating these professional teaching practices into our department. Applicable experiences could include teaching in other departments, at other educational institutions, including precollege or junior college, or implementing other forms of pedagogy including active learning in college math classes.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant area or expect to complete their Ph.D. by June 2026, must show evidence of excellence in teaching, and have research interests that align with faculty members in the department.
All applicants should indicate the AMS Subject Classification that most accurately represents their research area on UC Recruit.
As a campus with a diverse student body, we encourage applications from women, minorities, and individuals with a history of mentoring underrepresented minorities in the sciences. The preferred candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented and underserved populations in the sciences, or demonstrate an interest in campus-wide or departmental programs that provide research and professional development opportunities for a diverse student body.
The annual salary for this position is $84,900.
Appointments will be effective July 1, 2026 or later. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled. For fullest consideration, all application materials should be submitted on or before June 1, 2026.
