Teaching & Instructional Position

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences is a leader in teaching, research, and community engagement across diverse fields including food systems, sustainable resource management, human ecology, and environmental sociology. With more than 500 faculty and staff, over 1,500 undergraduates, and 600 graduate students, the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences leverages 25,000 acres of research land across Alberta to deliver high-impact academic programs and applied research in partnership with industry and communities.

Job Description

This position is part-time and has an initial appointment of 4 months.

Location – This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

The Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology has a history of producing high quality research on relevant topics pertaining to agricultural, resource and environmental economics. The Department includes a group of highly reputable scholars and a vibrant graduate studies program with approximately 60 graduate students. Department members are engaged in several undergraduate programs in the Faculty including a BA in environmental studies and BSc in environmental and conservation science. The department offers master and doctoral degrees in rural and environmental sociology, an interdisciplinary degree in risk and community resilience, along with degrees provided by economists within the department.

• AREC 533 – Production Economics
• RSOC 515 – Quantitative Social Research Methods
• ENCS 250 – Climate Change Economics and Policy

Responsibilities

Under the authority of the Chair, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Deliver high-quality instruction to undergraduate and graduate students.
• Develop the content of assigned courses and ensure their pedagogical design.
• Maintain reasonable availability for students during and outside class hours.
• Stay current in their field and in teaching practices to maintain competent and effective instruction.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have:

• Doctorate in a field relevant to the courses for which the candidate is applying (i.e., economics/agricultural economics or sociology), or, alternatively, a Master's degree in a relevant field. Significant post-secondary teaching experience may also be considered, upon evaluation.
• Proven university-level teaching experience with an excellent teaching record.
• Pedagogical and technological skills for online, in-person, co-modal, and hybrid teaching.
• Commitment to student success and well-being.
• Good understanding of the linguistic learning context in minority settings.

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with Schedule D of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
