The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. We are currently Uppsala University's third largest department, have around 350 employees, including 120 teachers and 120 PhD students. Approximately 5,000 undergraduate students take one or more courses at the department each year.
The announced position is placed at the Vi3-Division of the Department of Information Technology, and part of the BioImage Informatics Unit (BIIF) within the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics Platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden, NBIS).
Within BIIF, we provide research support and courses for digital image processing and analysis for life science applications.
BIIF is part of NBIS – 120 experts providing advanced bioinformatics support, infrastructure and training to the Swedish life science research community – and part of Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) – a Swedish national center for molecular bioscience research with focus on health and environmental research. Our work environment is the Vi3-Division of the Department of Information Technology, which gathers a unique combination of expertise in computerized image processing, human computer interaction, and computing education.
We are well connected to NMI, the National Microscopy Infrastructure and part of Euro BioImaging. BIIF is thus well connected with both image acquisition and data analysis infrastructure.
Duties: We are looking for a bioinformatician with strong interest in developing, implementing and adjusting image analysis tools for quantitative analysis of microscopy data. Much focus is on large scale analysis based on machine learning, deep learning/AI, as well as handling and analyzing large 3D microscopy data. You will work with shorter and longer projects and offer research support to researchers in Sweden. The appointment includes duties in the form of organizing user meetings and courses/workshops in digital image processing and analysis with life science applications.
Requirements: You must have a PhD degree within digital image analysis/image processing or similar, or alternatively in bioinformatics/biomedicine/biology or similar. Documented experience of programming and development of digital image analysis methods in the field of bioimage analysis is a requirement. This entails handling and analyzing large 3D microscopy data, experience in applying, improving and retraining deep learning (DL)-methods, and the usage of GPU-HPC clusters. Experience with building tools and delivering them to researchers is a requirement. Excellent communication in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement.
Additional qualifications: Experience from providing support in image analysis to other researchers is meriting. Experience in giving workshops and supervision of master students is also meriting.
