The UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for a lecturer position to teach the following course during the Spring quarter, 2026. The quarter begins on April 1 and ends on June 30. This appointment also provides opportunities for interaction with colleagues, laboratory facilities and research infrastructure at UCLA and the Getty Villa. Through its collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute, as a unit in the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and located in the UCLA Fowler Museum, the Conservation Program is part of a vibrant center of archaeological and cultural scholarship.
Conservation of Cultural Heritage (CLT HTG) 250 – Conservation Laboratory: Rock Art, Wall Paintings, and Mosaics Units: 4.0 (Formerly numbered M250.) Laboratory, four hours. Requisites: courses 210, 210L, 264. Recommended: course M215. Research-based laboratory on conservation of rock art, wall paintings (archaeological and modern composites on cements), mosaics, and decorated architectural surfaces. Experimental techniques and analysis of materials (using materials science and reverse engineering processes) for characterization of technology, constituent materials, and alteration products; development of conservation treatment proposals, testing of conservation products, and methods and conservation treatment. Letter grading.
The appointment will be at the lecturer level and will be located in the Program's research and training laboratories at the Getty Villa in Malibu. Duties include preparation and delivery of lectures and laboratory practical sessions and supervision of conservation treatments. The Program Laboratory Manager will assist the lecturer in obtaining lab supplies and cultural objects for treatment.
Candidates should hold a graduate degree in conservation from a recognized academic institution, with at least five years of experience in conservation practice. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous academic teaching experience both in delivering theoretical lectures and developing and supervising object treatments in the laboratory.
