Electrification and digitalisation are among the major areas for the future transition to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in these areas – including renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication, and wireless sensor networks, as well as research and education in Life Science, health technology, smart electronic sensors, and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international environment with around 160 employees who contribute to important technological energy and health at the Ångström Laboratory.

Project description The Division of Electricity is part of a larger consortium that aims to increase knowledge and gain experience in the optimization of electricity use in industry.

Our goal is to contribute to the models and methods for the study of the electric grid. The project offers opportunities to work at the intersection of real-time simulation, hardware in the loop testing, and data-driven methodologies, while collaborating closely with academic and industrial partners. The PhD candidate will engage in both theoretical and applied research.

The research group at Uppsala University has extensive experience of research in power systems and a large laboratory activity. We have an exciting work environment designed by the doctoral student and together with the supervisors. The doctoral student will be supervised by at least two supervisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also gives a salary supplement to the doctoral students employed at the department at Electrical Engineering at Uppsala University.

Duties The main task of a doctoral student is to devote to doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. Being a PhD student means independently running projects within a specific subject. You collaborate on an ongoing basis with other doctoral students and researchers to create results.

• The duties include: Developing and evaluating models of relevant electric grids for real time simulation and digital twin development.
• Hardware In the Loop (HIL) tests of electric components and communication protocols.
• Documentation of test and methods.
• Collaboration with other research projects.
• Teaching and other departmental duties may be part of the position, to a maximum of 20% of the working hours.

Qualifications required To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

• hold a Master's (second-cycle) degree in engineering physics, energy systems, electrical engineering, or a similar field.
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master's level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
• Experience with simulation/calculation/programming tools, like MATLAB Simulink.
• Must have excellent communication skills in English, both orally and in writing. Swedish is a merit.
