Lund University, Faculty of Science, Centre for Mathematical Sciences
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top universities. The University has around 46,000 students and 8,500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
The position will be based in the Division of Mathematics at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and the Faculty of Science (N) at Lund University, bringing together all mathematical sciences. The Division of Mathematics (N) unites leading experts in areas such as Partial Differential Equations, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, Harmonic Analysis and Applications, Inverse Problems, Differential Geometry, Scientific Computing, and Algebra. We attach great importance to a good, collegial working environment. The department is international with a relatively even gender distribution among employees.
Being a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.
The research will focus on nonlinear partial differential equations in fluid mechanics and wave motion. The position is partly funded by the Crafoord Foundation and concerns steady solutions to the Euler equations with applications to water waves with vorticity. The construction and analysis of such solutions involves methods from nonlinear functional analysis and dynamical systems. The research mainly involves mathematical analysis, but some numerical computations can be included if desired by the applicant. It is also possible to work on closely related areas such as thin film equations and nonlinear nonlocal dispersive equations together with other researchers at the department.
The main task for a doctoral student is to devote yourself to your doctoral studies, therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a doctoral student you will be part of a growing research group within an active research environment. Besides working on the project, you will have a possibility to attend seminars, conferences and dedicate part of the time to doctoral studies. The work duties may also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
To be eligible for admission and employment as a doctoral student, you must fulfil the requirements below. A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant:
A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in mathematics if the applicant has:
The selection of eligible applicants will be made taking into account the ability to benefit from the training based on the following criteria:
Great emphasis will be placed on how the applicant, through his/her experience and competence, is judged to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral studies.
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.
The employment is a fixed-term employment at full time, starting on the 1st September 2026, or as agreed.
Third cycle studies at Faculty of Science consist of full-time studies for 4 years. In the case of teaching and other departmental duties, the employment is extended accordingly. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
