The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, at the University of Helsinki invites applications for PhD student position in space plasma physics. The start time of the position is in autumn 2026, or otherwise as agreed, for a fixed-term ending latest in August 2030 – a Finnish PhD thesis project typically takes around four years. This PhD project will perform a coordinated analysis of multipoint in situ measurements and numerical simulations performed with the ion-kinetic Vlasiator code to quantify how interplanetary shocks modify solar wind current sheets across a range of scales. The research will be conducted within University of Helsinki Space Physics Group and will involve collaboration with leading experts in the field from Europe and the United States.
We are seeking a talented and motivated doctoral researcher (PhD student), who recently completed their MSc degree in the field of physics, space sciences, or a related field. The successful candidate will have a strong academic track record and either a solid theoretical foundation or experience with computational methods. Experience in data analysis and algorithm development using Python or equivalent programming languages is considered an asset. Given the highly international and collaborative nature of the research environment, strong presentation and communication skills are appreciated. Also, professional proficiency in either Finnish or English is required. The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment.
