Disciplines & Categories: Physics / Condensed Matter Physics / Theoretical Physics / Computational Physics / Materials Science / Quantum Physics
About the Institution & Lab
The Institute of Physics of São Carlos at the University of São Paulo (IFSC-USP) is a internationally recognized center for scientific research in South America. Our theoretical and computational quantum matter group focuses on pioneering electronic structure theory, topological physics, and multiscale modeling of novel two-dimensional materials and heterostructures.
About the Position & Job Duties
The postdoctoral fellow will build a multiscale theoretical and computational framework to investigate emergent quantum phases in moiré quantum matter.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
Performing first-principles electronic structure calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT);
Developing effective tight-binding and continuum models derived from ab initio structures;
Integrating machine learning frameworks (such as DeepH) for accelerated electronic structure simulations;
Analyzing topological invariants and quantum geometric properties in non-trivial phase spaces;
Collaborating with research thrusts focused on optoelectronic and photonic phenomena.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements:
PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline;
Solid expertise in constructing tight-binding and continuum models (e.g., via Wannier90);
Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in theoretical and computational condensed matter physics.
Desirable Qualifications:
Background in van der Waals heterostructures and/or moiré materials;
Proficiency in scientific software development (e.g., Python, Julia) and open-source code management (GitHub);
Demonstrated ability to work within interdisciplinary collaborations.
Funding & Benefits
This position is funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) under Grant Process Number 2025/11526-0.
The position offers:
Monthly Stipend: R$ 12.300,00 (tax-free);
Research Contingency Fund (Reserva Técnica): Equivalent to 10% of the annual fellowship value for conference attendance and research equipment;
Relocation Allowance (Auxílio-Instalação): Financial support for candidates moving to São Carlos from another city/state/country according to FAPESP rules.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application by email to [INSERT YOUR EMAIL] with the subject line “PostDoc – Ab initio and Multiscale Modeling”.
Please attach the following documents in PDF format:
Curriculum Vitae: Updated CV including a complete list of publications;
Cover Letter: A brief letter highlighting your qualifications, technical skills, and research motivation relevant to this project;
