Mechanical Engineer Or Mechanical Graduate Engineer

Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) provides reliable and cost-effective electricity, chilled water, steam, deionized water, compressed air, emergency power, and elevator services for The University of Texas at Austin. We have more than 200 employees in five divisions: Utilities Operations; Utilities Distribution; Power Systems, Controls, and Operating Technology; Finance and Administrative Services; and Engineering and Technical Services.

The Mechanical Engineer/Mechanical Graduate Engineer assumes responsibility for supporting all Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) working groups in a mechanical engineering capacity specific to utility plants and distribution systems. The Mechanical Graduate Engineer applies UEM and industry standards and/or complex engineering analyses and procedures to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability of mechanical systems.

• Mechanical System Engineering: Evaluates, troubleshoots, and reviews operation of utility systems including but not limited to combustion gas turbines, steam turbine generators, chillers, boilers, cooling towers and distribution systems. Analyzes controls, automation, and metered data to identify opportunities for improvements, recommend corrective actions, and optimize system performance.
• Project Management: Manages and coordinates special utility system projects by developing schedules, cost estimates, budgets, detailed final construction plans, specifications, special conditions, contracts, and agreements. Oversees project progress from preliminary project feasibility and long-range planning through design, construction, and commissioning.
• Reporting: Prepares documentation for investigations, feasibility studies, and other projects including initial, progress, and final reports. Determines project initial and long term costs and savings and prepares life-cycle analyses. Reports findings through written reports and presentations using advanced reporting tools such as Tableau and Power BI. Uses tools to provide stakeholders with clear insights into report findings.
• Technical Guidance and Compliance: Advises on industry standards and code requirements. Maintains, updates, and creates design and construction specifications and standard details. Reviews engineering scopes of work, assists in engineering firm selection, and reviews deliverables from outsourced engineers.
• Design and Construction Phase Reviews: Performs technical design review as a subject matter expert in the areas of mechanical engineering, reviews construction submittals, responds to requests for information, and reviews proposed contract changes for compliance with design standards.
• Communications Liaison: Facilitates effective communication among department and campus stakeholders. Establishes connections with external entities such as government agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public to facilitate the exchange of information, coordinate collaborative efforts, address inquiries, and provide timely responses. Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
• Continuous Improvement: Fosters a collaborative team environment. Identifies and implements innovative solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Identifies opportunities for process improvement within assignments. Promotes the use of innovative tools and methodologies to enhance project delivery efficiency and stakeholder satisfaction.
• Follows all University and UEM policies and procedures, takes required training, and identifies and reports safety hazards. Completes required continuing education. Performs work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents. Implements and enforces safety protocols in all assigned activities. Abides by UEM core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Drives UT vehicles in a safe manner.
• Perform other related functions as assigned. Required to carry University issued cell phone during work and on-call hours. Expected to work at all UT Austin campuses and facilities. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.

Required Qualifications – Mechanical Graduate Engineer

• Certified Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) in the State of Texas or the candidate must meet all qualifications for licensure and obtain a Texas E.I.T. within six (6) months of employment.
• A Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy systems.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to identify and solve problems, think critically, and create solutions.
• Ability to adapt to change and quickly learn new technologies and processes.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations to nontechnical audiences.
• Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications – Mechanical Graduate Engineer

• Familiarity with environmental regulations in the energy sector.
• Experience in the development or review of construction standards or codes.
• Experience in educational, research and/or health care facilities.
• Experience in energy and water conservation programs.
• Experience using data visualization software such as Tableau or Power BI.
• Knowledge and skills in AutoCAD and Revit applications.

Required Qualifications – Mechanical Engineer

• Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or licensed in another State with the ability to obtain reciprocity in Texas within 6 months of employment.
• Minimum four years experience in industrial, steam, chilled water, or utility systems.
• Experience with project management and budget development.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to identify and solve problems, think critically, and create solutions.
• Ability to adapt to change and quickly learn new technologies and processes.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations to nontechnical audiences.
• Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications – Mechanical Engineer

• Seven or more years related experience in industrial, steam, chilled water, or utility systems.
• Familiarity with environmental regulations in the energy sector.
• Experience in the development or review of construction standards or codes.
• Experience in educational, research and/or health care facilities.
• Experience in energy and water conservation programs.
• Experience using data visualization software such as Tableau or Power BI.
• Knowledge and skills in AutoCAD and Revit applications.

Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

Mechanical Engineer – $115,000 + depending on qualifications

Mechanical Graduate Engineer – $90,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

40 Hr Work Schedule; Monday-Friday 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM. Limited weekend, holiday, and after-hours work or availability may be required.
