We are seeking a Medical Statistician/Statistical Programmer to join the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), within the Nuffield Department Of Population Health at the University Of Oxford. You will work closely with statisticians, epidemiologists and other colleagues on large prospective cohort studies investigating lifestyle, dietary, hormonal, molecular and genetic factors in relation to cancer and other common non-communicable diseases.
The post focuses on linking and managing large epidemiological datasets, preparing data for analysis, and carrying out statistical analyses. You will work particularly with the EPIC study and EPIC-Oxford, which links cohort data with NHS records of cancer registrations, deaths and hospital admissions. You will also support EPIC-Oxford 2, a new study building on the cohort. Your work will include managing research databases; incorporating electronic health records, questionnaire data and laboratory results; deriving disease outcomes from coded health data; and preparing datasets for cohort and nested case-control studies. You will analyse data, mainly using survival and logistic regression, and prepare tables, figures and reports for research projects and publications. There may also be opportunities to work with biomarker and omics data.
You will hold a graduate degree, or have equivalent experience, in medical statistics, statistics, health data science or another quantitative subject, with training in statistical analysis and epidemiological study design. You will have experience working with routinely collected electronic health records and preparing epidemiological data for analysis, including survival analysis and logistic regression. You will also be proficient in Stata and/or R, and have experience using SQL and a relational database system to manage large datasets. Excellent attention to detail, clear and well-documented coding, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential, as are strong communication and organisational skills.
An understanding of epidemiological concepts and study designs, experience working with NHS-linked data under information governance requirements, or experience with biobank, sample-tracking, biomarker, dietary or omics data would be an advantage. Experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications and designing databases would also be beneficial.
The post is full-time (although part-time is considered) and fixed term for 2 years. The closing date for applications is noon on 16 November 2026. You will be required to upload a CV and a cover letter as part of your online application. The cover letter should clearly describe how you meet each of the selection criteria listed in the job description.
