The Laboratory of Dr. Jennifer Nyland at the Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Neural and Behavioral Sciences in Hershey, PA is seeking a full-time Research Technologist 3 to join an NIH-funded project to investigate the underlying mechanisms driving sex-specific immune responses to acute and chronic pain and the assessment of interventions for the management of pain, particularly in light of substance use disorders.
Dr. Nyland’s research focuses on the intersection of pain, stress, and addiction. The lab’s research spans animal models of pain and addiction as well as clinical research focused on pain management and the chronification of pain. The laboratory uses behavioral techniques as well as surgical, molecular, and pharmacological techniques in rodents. The lab also has a DoD-funded human subjects research project investigating biomarkers (physiological, psychological, genomic, and neural connectivity via fMRI) that predict the transition from acute to chronic pain.
The successful candidate must have prior experience working with rodent models and be proficient in common molecular techniques. While experience with human subjects research is not required, it is highly desirable. Additional laboratory responsibilities will include supervising students, ordering supplies, ordering and management of laboratory animals, management of laboratory expenses, assisting with data analysis and safety protocols, and upkeep of equipment. Candidates must be willing to learn new techniques and be responsible, self-motivated, conscientious, flexible, a good communicator, and possess strong organizational skills. Preference will be given to candidates that possess the above skill sets.
This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher (Master’s degree preferred) plus 7 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or any other related field.
