Traumatic Brain Injury, Recovery and Translational Neuroscience

The doctoral student will join the Translational Neurosurgery Lab at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet. The lab conducts interdisciplinary and translational research on traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurotrauma, brain resilience, recovery and long-term outcomes after brain injury.

The research environment brings together clinical neuroscience, epidemiology, biomarkers, neuroimaging, physiology, data science and precision medicine. The doctoral student will work in a multidisciplinary setting with access to relevant clinical and research cohorts, longitudinal data, biological samples and national and international collaborations, depending on the final doctoral project.

The position offers a stimulating environment for a doctoral student interested in developing expertise at the interface of clinical neuroscience, translational research and advanced data-driven methods. Opportunities for collaboration and research exchange with national and international partners may be available during the doctoral education.

The doctoral student will be supervised within the Translational Neurosurgery Lab by an experienced supervisory team at Karolinska Institutet, with complementary clinical, translational and methodological expertise.

The doctoral project will investigate factors associated with outcome, recovery and resilience after traumatic brain injury, with a particular interest in mild traumatic brain injury and persistent symptoms.

The exact focus and methodological composition of the project will be adapted within the overall research framework according to the doctoral student's background, available data and samples, scientific priorities, and the development of ongoing collaborations. Possible areas include clinical and longitudinal outcome studies, epidemiology, biomarkers, imaging, physiological measures, neurocognitive outcomes, digital phenotyping, multimodal data integration and predictive modelling.

The doctoral student will contribute to the planning, conduct and analysis of research studies; perform literature reviews; manage, analyse and interpret clinical and research data; contribute to scientific manuscripts; present findings at national and international meetings; and participate in doctoral courses and other learning activities. Depending on the final project, training may include epidemiological and statistical methods, clinical research methods, biomarker analysis, neuroimaging, data management, computational modelling and reproducible research practices.

The student is expected to contribute actively to the collaborative research environment of the Translational Neurosurgery Lab and to work independently as well as in close collaboration with clinical, methodological and international partners.

As a doctoral student, you are offered an individual research project, an experienced supervisory team, a wide range of doctoral courses and the opportunity to work in an internationally connected research environment. You will be employed on a doctoral studentship and receive a contractual salary. Employees also have access to KI's modern gym free of charge and reimbursement for medical care.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral education if you:

• have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification,
• have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded at second-cycle/advanced/master level, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You must show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school. Follow KI's instructions on English language requirements for doctoral education.

Necessary qualifications and qualities

• You have a medical degree.
• You have an academic background and documented ability to work analytically and systematically with scientific questions, quantitative data, or experimental or clinical research material.
• You have very good written and oral communication skills in English.
• You can work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and international research environment.
• You are accurate, curious, responsible and strongly motivated to undertake doctoral education in neurotrauma and translational neuroscience.

Desirable qualifications

• Previous research experience in traumatic brain injury, neuroscience, neurotrauma, rehabilitation, neurodegeneration, clinical research or a related area.
• Experience of longitudinal, clinical, registry-based, imaging, physiological, biomarker or molecular data.
• Experience of quantitative methods and/or statistical programming, for example in R, Python, Stata, MATLAB or equivalent software.
• Experience of scientific writing, publications, conference presentations or multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Interest in combining clinical and biological data to improve the understanding of brain injury, recovery and resilience.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship for a maximum of four years full-time.
