The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro biology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala.

The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join Oskar Eriksson's research group at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. The group's research focuses on translational studies of the complement system and innate immunity and is funded by, among others, the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Society for Medical Research (SSMF).

Duties and responsibilities The advertised PhD project will investigate the role of the complement system, a key component of innate immunity, in the development and function of endothelial cells and blood vessels. The project will examine endothelial cell-specific expression of complement factors and their importance for endothelial cell activation and thrombus formation. The work will involve advanced cell models and vascular organoids, as well as analytical techniques such as flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The research conducted by the group is translational in nature, and there will be opportunities to validate experimental findings using clinical samples.

The successful candidate is expected to independently drive the project in collaboration with other members of the research group as well as national and international colleagues and collaborators. Duties may also include teaching and other departmental responsibilities, although these will not exceed 20% of the total working time.

Requirements To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

• hold a Master's (second-cycle) degree in immunology, or other relevant subject
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master's level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with demonstrated practical and theoretical experience in molecular biology research focused on the complement system and innate immunity. Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English is essential for the position, as the research is conducted in an international environment. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is required, and considerable emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability for the role.

Additional qualifications Previous experience in research on the complement system is considered an advantage, as is experience with lentiviral overexpression of complement factors in cell-based models.

About the employment The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
