PhD Student In Organometallic Catalysis

The foundation Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr is a renowned research institution that is over 100 years old and has already received two Nobel Prizes in its history. The institute is engaged in basic research in the field of catalysis with the aim of maximizing the efficient use of natural resources.

As part of the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores Solvation), the Early Career research group “Catalysis” of Dr. Hanna Hinrika Cramer develops organometallic catalysts with earth-abundant first-row transition metals. The team combines experiments, quantum chemistry, and spectroscopy to study reaction mechanisms and to discover how solvation and catalyst design affect the rate and selectivity. Current projects focus on developing well-defined chromium precatalysts for applications in olefin upgrading and the activation of strong bonds.

The Cramer group invites applications for a PhD Student (m/f/d) in Organometallic Catalysis (full-time, with 39 hours).

Job Description

• The synthesis and characterization of organometallic complexes
• The development of catalytic applications
• And quantum chemical calculations on electronic structures and reaction mechanisms

Qualifications

• A Master's degree in chemistry or a related field
• Basic knowledge and research experience in molecular inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, catalysis, and/or reaction mechanisms
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Intrinsic motivation and curiosity about organometallic catalysis and sustainable chemistry

Our Offer

The position is funded for three years and located at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB). Students will participate in the integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS) including a three-month international research stay, industrial internship, or entrepreneurship training. As part of RESOLV, the group has access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and collaborations with partners at RUB and at the Max Planck Institute für Kohlenforschung. Group members will therefore have the chance to learn highly diverse techniques, depending on their research focus and interest.
