Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory
The Department of Chemistry – Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs.
Project description: Within the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, we develop tomorrow's batteries, with the goal of making them both more energy-dense and more sustainable. Examples of strategies to achieve this include transitioning to sodium-ion batteries, batteries that use solid materials as electrolytes, and batteries built without bulky anode materials, commonly known as “anode-free” batteries. As part of a larger research project in collaboration with the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, we will develop and investigate anode-free sodium batteries based on polymer electrolytes. We are therefore seeking a PhD student to contribute to Uppsala University's part of the project.
Duties: The work involves experimental polymer science, materials chemistry, electrochemistry and spectroscopy. Activities will include both materials development and the fabrication of battery cells, as well as electrochemical testing and spectroscopic materials analysis (primarily X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS). The project is carried out in close international collaboration, and both short-term and longer research visits to the Taiwanese project partner may therefore be relevant. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental responsibilities, although these will comprise no more than 20% of the working time.
Requirements: To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must have
The candidate must have very good oral and written proficiency in English. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Additional qualifications: Experience from battery fabrication and electrochemical characterization, hands-on experimental advanced materials analysis (especially electron spectroscopy), polymer materials and/or polymer electrolytes.
About the employment: The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 2027-01-11 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
