The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with approximately 250 employees and over 300 individuals affiliated with Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various areas. Research takes place in close connection to clinical activities at Uppsala University Hospital and encompasses both fundamental studies on the causes of diseases and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in microbiology and infectious diseases. The focus will be on projects related to bacterial genomics and phylogeny as well as antibiotic resistance. The work involves practical microbiological laboratory work ('wet lab') as well as a significant portion of bioinformatic analysis, such as sequence data analysis. You will be involved in several projects within the research group, taking on a coordinating role in addition to subject expertise. Several projects will address the intersection of humans, animals, and the environment.

The research group conducts both clinical studies and basic research. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work with a team of diverse scientific backgrounds and interact with and supervise students in the group.

You should have a PhD degree in microbiology with a focus on bacteriological research and antibiotic resistance. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline.

The ability to work independently and a strong interest in translational microbiology are essential. Documented competence in bacteriological lab work, including method development and experimental design, with bacteria and genomic analysis (including AMR) is required.

Teaching and/or supervision experience is required.

Fluent spoken and written English is necessary, and the ability to communicate in both spoken and written Swedish is also required.

A background in veterinary medicine and infection biology is meriting.

Experience using Nanopore sequencing and bacterial genomic analysis using the software CLC are merits of interest, as well as experience in genetic engineering of bacterial isolates and interdisciplinary collaboration.
