About This Opportunity

We are seeking a talented Principal Technical Officer (Electronics Engineer) to provide specialist technical expertise to support the pioneering neuroscience research undertaken at the Queensland Brain Institute. Working within a collaborative, inquisitive and highly skilled technical team, you will design, develop and manufacture specialised electronic equipment that enables researchers to push the boundaries of brain science. This role plays a critical part in translating ambitious research ideas into practical, reliable and safe technical solutions within a world‑class research environment.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Designing, developing and manufacturing specialised electronic equipment, PCBs, prototypes and research-focused engineering systems.
• Collaborating closely with researchers and research support staff to deliver end‑to‑end “design and build” solutions that meet complex experimental needs.
• Conducting advanced simulations, feasibility studies, cost calculations,
• Fault finding and repair services for laboratory equipment.
• Maintaining a safe, compliant and high‑functioning electronic workshop, including oversight of tools, equipment, risk assessments and safe operating procedures.

About You

You will bring a strong technical foundation, a creative problem‑solving mindset and a genuine commitment to enabling impactful research. You will demonstrate:

• Completion of a postgraduate qualification in electronics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.
• Demonstrated expertise in PCB manufacture, electronic components, hand soldering and surface mount soldering.
• Advanced knowledge in the design and manufacture of electronic equipment, including firmware development for embedded processors.
• Ability to manage, mentor and develop technical staff within a research or laboratory environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• A high level of organisation, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A commitment to research integrity, workplace health and safety, and the University's values of openness, respect and integrity.
