This position has a term length of 12 months.

This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton. This competition will be used to fill one full-time position primarily for daytime shifts.

These positions are located at the University of Alberta Hospital. The successful incumbent will perform patient-oriented research, para-medical procedures, preparatory work and provide administrative support to various research studies. The research staff will refer any unusual findings or problems related to the research or patient treatment to the medical Research Lead. Interaction with patients on obtaining informed consent, obtaining detailed histories/physicals and arranging follow-ups are an integral part of the activities of this position. Please note that working conditions may result in exposure to noxious odours and contact with drugs or infectious disease and body fluids of patients. The successful candidate will promote the importance of clinical research and act as a liaison between the research team, interdisciplinary clinical team (including Emergency physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and laboratory technologists), other research groups (mainly University and Alberta Health Services), industry representatives, and key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Initiate contact with Emergency Department (ED) patients and assesses for potential enrollment into various emergency inpatient and outpatient research studies in collaboration with the most-responsible physician;
• Screen for study inclusion/exclusion, obtain informed consent, and enrol patients from the ED for clinical research studies following permission from the AHS clinical staff and most-responsible physician;
• Complete interviews, chart review forms and patient assessment to capture data related to the area or procedures being undertaken;
• Assemble data that describes medical conditions, codes and/or classifies medical information, coordinates the assembly of data, oversees data input into manual and/or computerized record retention systems (mostly REDCap) and may be responsible for regular updating and/or back-ups to maintain the integrity of material being gathered;
• Complete telephone and/or in-person follow-ups to assess outcomes, including changes in health status;
• Liaise with clinical, research and administrative staff at the University of Alberta, Acute Care Alberta, Covenant Health, and other related groups;
• Coordinate a variety of technical or non-technical support activities for research;
• Perform other research related duties as required.

Qualifications

• Minimum related post-secondary education in BSc; however, MSc, BScN or related research or clinical training preferred;
• Previous research experience strongly preferred, ideally in an Emergency Department or acute care setting;
• Ability to work flexible hours as agreed upon for patient recruitment and enrollment;
• Experience with data entry in REDCap or related database is preferred and basic analysis is desirable;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., MSWord, PowerPoint, and Excel) is required, and experience with digital communication tools is desirable;
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Research Ethics is desirable;
• Demonstrate superior organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail;
• Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills.
