We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic research assistant for a one-year position starting September 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Section for GeoGenetics operates between genetics, geology, and archaeology. Our research aims are to improve current methodologies within ancient genomics by optimizing protocols and develop novel, fast computational and statistical tools in order to address important scientific questions. We accomplish this using multi-disciplinary approaches both from the diverse research within the section as well as a range of collaborators. Our main techniques include DNA extraction and sequencing, bioinformatics, sedimentology, molecular geobiology Quaternary climate, and archaeology.
Job description: We are looking for a research assistant with experience in ancient DNA laboratory work to support wet-lab data generation and related activities in our ancient DNA laboratory.
The successful candidate will be involved in the processing of archaeological and historical biological material for ancient DNA analysis, including sample preparation, DNA extraction, library preparation, targeted enrichment/capture, sequencing preparation, quality control, and laboratory documentation. The position will suit a careful, well-organized person with experience working in contamination-sensitive molecular laboratories and an interest in ancient DNA, archaeogenetics, human population history, or pathogen genomics.
Main responsibilities:
The research assistant will contribute to the generation of ancient DNA data from archaeological samples. Tasks will include handling skeletal, dental, or other ancient biological material; preparing samples for DNA extraction; performing extraction protocols optimized for degraded DNA; preparing double-stranded and/or single-stranded sequencing libraries; carrying out indexing, amplification, pooling, and quality-control steps; and performing targeted capture/enrichment assays where required.
Required experience and qualifications:
Personal qualities:
The position requires a person who is meticulous, reliable, and highly aware of contamination risks. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with repetitive precision work, careful record keeping, and strict laboratory routines. We value initiative, good communication skills, and the ability to work constructively with researchers, students, laboratory technicians, and collaborators.
The successful applicant will join an active research environment focused on ancient DNA, archaeogenetics, and the genomic study of past populations and pathogens. The position provides an opportunity to contribute directly to the generation of large-scale ancient genome datasets and to participate in interdisciplinary projects involving archaeology, history, molecular biology, and population genetics.
Terms of employment:
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
