Research Engineering/Scientist Associate III

The Goris lab studies the neural basis of visual perception and cognition, using an interdisciplinary approach. Research methods include human behavioral experiments, monkey electrophysiology, and computational modeling. Projects are supported by federal agencies and private foundations.

The successful candidate will serve in a dynamic research support role spanning laboratory operations and management, aseptic surgical procedures, supervision and training of laboratory members, and specialized engineering projects.

This is a one-year fixed-term position.

Purpose

Provide advanced technical, operational, and coordination support for agency-funded neuroscience research in the laboratory of Dr. Robbe Goris within the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. Independently support laboratory operations while serving as the primary coordinator for a multi-disciplinary research program.

Responsibilities

Advanced Research Support:

• Independently perform non-human primate care and enrichment program.
• Lead aseptic surgical procedures.
• Support specific engineering projects.
• Develop, optimize, and document laboratory workflows and standard operating procedures

Project Coordination and Research Administration:

• Serve as the primary coordinator and day-to-day point of contact for a multi-disciplinary research program.
• Coordinate laboratory purchasing, equipment procurement, and project-related expenditures.

Laboratory Operations, Training, and Supervision:

• Coordinate day-to-day laboratory operations including inventory management, equipment maintenance, protocol documentation, regulatory compliance, and laboratory organization.
• Train laboratory personnel in non-human primate work and aseptic surgical procedures.
• Supervise undergraduate research assistants and assist with onboarding new laboratory personnel.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related field with at least two years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering plus at least four years of relevant experience.
• Experience with systems neuroscience techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects independently.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing laboratory purchasing and research operations.
• Experience supervising or mentoring students or research personnel.

Salary Range

$50,000 – $65,000, depending on qualifications
