Research Fellow

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

We are seeking a highly motivated and interdisciplinary Research Fellow to support the development and integration of soft, flexible, and stretchable electronic materials and devices. The role centres on the design, fabrication, and characterisation of soft functional materials, films, and device interfaces for flexible and bio-integrated electronics, with emphasis on mechanical/strain engineering, adhesion and interface design, and reliable device performance under deformation. Application areas include soft bioelectronics and wearable sensing, plant biointerfaces, and electrophysiological signal monitoring. The successful candidate will contribute to NTU's research in advanced materials and soft/flexible device platforms by bridging materials science, interfacial engineering, and soft/stretchable electronics.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, fabricate, and characterise soft functional materials, films, and device interfaces for flexible, stretchable, and bio-integrated electronic devices, including biointerfaces for electrophysiological and environmental sensing.
• Develop soft and bio-derived functional materials, adhesive and interface designs, and mechanical/strain-engineering strategies that enable strong adhesion, strain isolation, and reliable device function under deformation.
• Conduct microstructural, chemical, mechanical, and electromechanical characterization, including electrical and reliability evaluation under bending, stretching, and cyclic deformation.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers to integrate soft-material and device solutions into flexible and stretchable electronic systems, sensors, and platforms where relevant.
• Assist in manuscript preparation, conference presentations, grant development, and reporting to funding agencies and collaborators.
• Mentor junior researchers and students, and support general laboratory management, procurement and equipment coordination where required.

Job Requirements:

• PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated research experience in flexible/stretchable electronics, soft or bio-derived functional materials, or soft device interfaces.
• Strong background in the design and characterisation of soft materials and/or device interfaces, including adhesion, mechanical/strain engineering, and electromechanical behaviour on soft or deformable substrates.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: soft and stretchable hybrid electronics, biomaterials for bioelectronics, plant biointerfaces and electrophysiological sensing, adhesive and interface materials, flexible/stretchable device fabrication, and reliability of devices under repeated mechanical deformation.
• Familiarity with microstructural, chemical, mechanical, and electrical/electromechanical characterisation methods for materials and interfaces; data-analysis skills (e.g., MATLAB) an advantage.
• Publication record in reputable journals and the ability to independently drive research tasks to completion.
