This post will be part of the recently initiated Faraday Institution project 3D CAT, accelerating development of 3D Li rich cathode materials. The project will involve researchers from Oxford University with whom the applicant would work closely, as well as industry partners.
The post holder will be required to carry out research to develop and understand next generation electrode materials for advanced Li-ion batteries, and apply X-ray characterisation and diagnostic techniques to understand their modes of operation. This will include working closely with industry and university project partners.
The research work will investigate the electrochemical and physical properties of a family of next generation cathode materials within the 3D Li-rich partially ordered rocksalt category. This project will involve the use of advanced electrochemical and microstructural diagnostic techniques to inform new approaches to performance enhancement and electrode design and fabrication which will be delivered in partnership with Faraday Institution consortium projects.
The role is fixed term from 1st of October 2026 to 30th of September 2028. in the first instance.
Salary is £45,103 – £49,943 per annum inclusive of London allowance.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold or shortly expect to obtain a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Electrochemistry, Materials Science or in a closely related field. You will have knowledge of one of the following research techniques and expertise: Advanced x-ray characterisation of electrochemical energy materials and devices, with a focus on in situ or operando techniques. Working knowledge of at least one of the following techniques is desirable: i) Bragg coherent diffraction imaging ii) XANES tomography or ptychography, iii) 3D XRD / XRD CT, iv) X-ray CT. The successful candidate will also have working knowledge of x-ray powder diffraction as applied to battery materials or similar.
