The Research Fellow in Offshore Charger Development and Vessel Charging Management will play a key role in the development of next-generation offshore charging technologies to support the electrification of maritime vessels.
The postholder will undertake research, design, development, and experimental validation activities associated with offshore charging, with a particular focus on the design and development of offshore vessel connector, charging cable condition monitoring system, and intelligent vessel integration and charging management solutions. The role will contribute to the advancement of safe, reliable, and efficient charging systems for marine applications, supporting the transition towards sustainable maritime transport.
Working within UCL's e-Motion Laboratory and Advanced Propulsion Laboratory, the successful candidate will develop and integrate mechatronic systems for a laboratory-scale offshore charging demonstrator, conduct experimental testing and performance evaluation, and develop advanced control and optimisation algorithms for vessel charging management. The postholder will collaborate closely with academic and industrial partners, contributing to project delivery, research publications, and the translation of innovative technologies from concept to demonstration.

You will hold an undergraduate degree, Master's degree and awarded PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Marine Electrification, Control Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Passionate about advancing the future of marine electrification, you will combine strong technical expertise with a practical, hands-on approach to developing innovative engineering solutions.
You will have experience building mechatronics-based laboratory test benches and developing high-fidelity multiphysics models, simulations and algorithms for real-time engineering applications. Your expertise will include marine charging technologies, offshore charging connectors, charging cables, and the integration of electrical and mechatronic systems for vessel charging applications.
You will also have experience developing and integrating laboratory-scale demonstrators to evaluate real-time charging management, cable condition monitoring, automated plugging systems and intelligent vessel integration under representative offshore and harsh sea operating conditions. Alongside strong algorithm development skills and proficiency in multiple programming languages and software platforms, you will be able to translate complex engineering challenges into robust, practical solutions.
You will have a strong publication record in leading journals and international conferences, together with excellent technical reporting, communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Above all, you will be committed to collaborative research, advancing equality, diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an ambitious, multidisciplinary research environment.
Experience of working on offshore charging systems is desirable.

Please note that remuneration for this post is budgeted at Grade 7 Spine Point 32 which equates to £46, 261.00 including London Weighting Allowance. This will adjust upwards from 1 August 2026.
