Research fellow (Maritime Studies) Full-time

Research Fellow Position

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is looking for a motivated research fellow holding a PhD degree specializing in maritime studies, transportation/logistics, operations research, computer science, or a related field. The appointment is typically for one year and may be extended, subjected to performance and availability of research funding.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct research on shipping and port operational optimization, maritime decarbonization, data analytics, and the development and application of novel methodologies (including LLM-based prediction and optimization)
• Coordinate the preparation of project reports and deliverables
• Publish research findings in top peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings
• Collaborate with other researchers on project discussions and joint deliverables
• Support the preparation of research proposals and grant applications

Job Requirements:

• A PhD degree in transport engineering, maritime transport and management, computer science, operations research, or a related field from a recognized university
• Strong expertise in applying large language models (LLMs) and AI techniques to prediction and optimization problems; familiarity with optimization algorithms is highly desirable
• Excellent programming skills in Python, C++, Java, Julia, or other relevant languages
• Knowledge of maritime decarbonization and alternative fuels is a plus
• A good record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals in maritime transport, logistics management, machine learning, deep learning, or optimization
• Proficient in both written and spoken communication
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and deliver solutions under tight timelines
• Experience in proposal writing and funding application
