This post will be part of a team of researchers at UCL and MIT investigating the ability to improve estimates of pollutant emissions from rocket launches to better constrain the atmospheric impacts of this emerging pollution source. The position is funded by a Leverhulme Research Project Grant awarded to Prof Marais in June this year. The Research Fellow will have the exciting opportunity to learn to use and adapt an existing plume model to simulate pollution from rockets during launch. This will then provide the synthetic observations needed to validate top-down emission inversion estimates from space-based remote sensing instruments. The Research Fellow will also gather datasets of launch locations and timings, and of rocket characteristics to (i) mine satellite data for coincidences between launches and instrument overpasses or scans, (ii) interpret key factors affecting pollutant emissions from launches, and (iii) maintain UCL's world-leading online tracker of rocket launch emissions. The full job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page. This is a full time, fixed term post with funding available for 2.5 years. The appointment is available to start from 1st January 2027. Funding is available at Grade 7, spine point 32-33 (including London Allowance). Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Eloise Marais (e.marais@ucl.ac.uk). If you have any queries regarding the application process, or if you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, please contact the department's research administration team: geog.research@ucl.ac.uk
