Your Team

MAX IV is building TomoWISE, a new tomography beamline dedicated to advancing materials science for sustainability. To complete this project, we are forming a specialized team to develop the beamline into a fully operational facility.

As part of this team, which now includes a Beamline Lead Scientist, a Research Engineer, and a Data Scientist, you will collaborate closely with experts across the Technical and Science divisions to plan, install, and commission advanced infrastructure and equipment. You will contribute to developing and maintaining tomographic imaging methodologies and supporting future beamline users. The project is led by the TomoWISE Beamline Lead Scientist, and the team will be part of the Beamline Office Group within the Science Division for the duration of the project.

MAX IV is looking for a beamline scientist with a solid experience in instrument and/or methodological development for tomography, along with a demonstrated commitment to supporting and serving the scientific community. The ideal candidate will have a background in materials science and a passion for advancing research on sustainable materials.

The successful candidate will contribute to the construction of a new beamline and help shape its initial scientific program starting from the early commissioning of the large beam option in 2028. Alongside contributing to the beamline project and preparing for its future capabilities, the candidate is expected to propose and carry out an independent research project, preferably within collaborations with present and future users of MAX IV.

Your Main Work Tasks Will Be

• Contribute to the installation and commissioning of beamline instrumentation, including optics, sample stages, and detectors.
• Contribute to the implementation of relevant software for tomographic reconstruction and image analysis, in collaboration with the beamline team and other internal resources.
• Drive a research program within national and international collaborations, focused on materials for sustainability.
• Present and publish research results internally and in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.
• Engage with the MAX IV user community, deliver talks, initiate collaborations, and actively contribute to the outreach of the team.

To Be Successful In This Role You Need To Have The Following Qualifications

• PhD in a STEM field.
• Solid scientific profile in materials science, with a demonstrated research track record and genuine scientific drive in a materials science domain (e.g. structural materials, energy materials, geology, functional materials for sustainability).
• Strong background in tomographic imaging or related X-ray microscopy techniques, including hands-on experience with complex instrumentation integration, commissioning, and validation — covering both hardware (optics, sample stages, detectors) and software (data acquisition, instrument control systems, and data analysis).
• Strong background in experimental research, with a focus on microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-rays.
• Proven ability to develop research projects from proposal to publication, with a collaborative approach.
• Experience presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
• Fluency in English – spoken and written.

• Previous experience working in a synchrotron beamline, or similar environment.
• Proven ability to drive your own research program, e.g. track record of grant applications.
• Experience and ability to prioritize and communicate efficiently in a fast-paced environment of a large-scale user facility.
• Hands-on approach with a dedication to experimental work.
• Experience working in large collaborative teams, including student training, supervision, and grant applications.
• Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external partners.
• Background in scientific programming is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with AI/ML-based approaches for image reconstruction, segmentation, or quantitative data analysis is considered a merit.

As a person you are curious, self-driven, flexible, communicative, and dedicated to teamwork. You have proven ability to handle complex system integration and to coordinate effectively with support groups, working as part of a multidisciplinary team where contributions from technical and scientific staff across divisions are essential to progress, is an asset.
