The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic. The Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) is part of the Medical Sciences Division and is the largest European academic department in its field, running a globally competitive programme of research and teaching. The Kennedy Institute is a biomedical research centre uniquely bringing together discovery science and early-stage clinical research, to develop transformative new therapies for chronic inflammatory and musculoskeletal conditions. The Dendrou group is an interdisciplinary team whose research aims to compare inflammatory diseases and immunological responses across tissues, over time and upon perturbation for translational benefit, leveraging multiomic technologies in conjunction with cutting-edge computational and machine learning approaches.
As an employer, we genuinely care about our employees' wellbeing and this is reflected in the range of benefits that we offer including: an excellent contributory pension scheme, 38 days annual leave, a comprehensive range of childcare services, family leave schemes, cycle loan scheme, discounted bus travel and season ticket travel loans, membership to a variety of social and sports clubs.
We are offering an exciting and unique opportunity for a bioinformatician to join an interdisciplinary research programme, supported by a Wellcome Discovery Award, investigating the mechanisms that drive chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation in autoimmune liver and other immune-mediated diseases. In this role you will develop new methodologies, taking overall or shared responsibility for development/maintenance of computational pipelines for integration of omics data with other relevant datasets. You will also identify, define and plan new projects, coordinating analysis of omics data and relevant associated datasets as required to support the programme objectives. Additionally, you will manage junior data scientists to support the programme objectives as well as work closely with experimental and clinical and industry to better understand the domain, help address scientific hypotheses and support the programme objectives. You will develop well-documented open source code implementing algorithms for general use and contribute to the production of scientific reports and publications for high profile journals, including taking leadership in more specialised publications on novel aspects of bioinformatics.
You will hold a PhD/DPhil with a significant computational and/or biomedical element, together with expertise in bioinformatics analysis of omics datasets, including single-cell and spatial multi-omics analysis. You will have demonstrable experience of applying machine learning/AI methods as well as experience and knowledge of python programming. You will demonstrate experience of software development using version control (e.g. GitHub or similar) and experience using a High Performance Computing environment. You will demonstrate an interest in immunology in the context of disease and have a good scientific publication record given career pathway. Experience and knowledge of another relevant programming language (e.g. R) and experience of deep learning frameworks (e.g. tensorflow, pytorch) are desirable.
You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application. Please quote 188255 in all correspondence.
